The bean has always been a legume as almost sacred sense obtain fertility (its shape is reminiscent of more or less that of the embryo). With a very long power conservation, it also kept for months or even years, in jars and could be in the Middle Ages a popular wedding gift.
It was therefore natural to shove a cake almost religious as the cake (to celebrate the gifts of the Epiphany and the return of light) a bean, vegetable dry but certainly contains the seeds of the future ...
Only in the last quarter of the nineteenth century that the bakers had the idea to replace the bean an organic bean porcelain evoking the form of a swaddled baby Jesus, what was well pleasing in the townhouses. Later, the forms ranged up losing any religious connotation.
Thus was born the passion for the collection of beans. FYI, it's called favophilie or fabophilie.
